Many people wonder about what a cosmetic surgery of the nose does really.
Is it painful? What is the procedure? What is the recovery time after such a surgery?
The plastic cosmetic surgery of the nose ‘Nose job’ has the scientific name of “rhinoplasty”.
It is the most delicate cosmetic surgical procedure for a surgeon to perform.
Rhinoplasty is used to modify the nose and improve its contour so that its appearance fits well with the other facial features.
An unattractive nose can become the center of attraction and can mask the softness of other more attractive facial features.
A nice nose, however, should be unobtrusive. It should not attract attention. It should instead let other people focus their attention on the most communicative feature of the face: the eyes.
Therefore, although the nose is the center of the face, a beautiful nose should remain neutral.
A nice nose should also bring softness to the expression.
This is where the plastic and cosmetic nose surgery “rhinoplasty” comes into play:
Rhinoplasty is used to change the nose in the most discreet way possible.
Considering the importance of the nose in the face because of its paramount position, the success of such an operation is crucial.
It is essential that a plastic nose surgery “rhinoplasty” takes into account the global facial harmony.
This is why a small correction of the nose may very often make a huge difference on the whole facial appearance, even though the change is discreet.
Alterations and corrections must remain natural.
It is important that the nose does not look too operated or exaggerated after surgery.
The most important goal of nasal surgery for Dr. Nabil Fanous, after the safety of his patients, is the natural appearance of a rhinoplasty once completed.
Friends or family members who have had the same surgery by him refer many of the patients who consult Dr. Fanous for a rhinoplasty.
Seeing the result on a person we know is one of the ways to assess the skills of a surgeon.
The ‘surgical approaches’?
There are two main surgical approaches for a rhinoplasty:
The “open” approach:
This means that short incisions are made outside the nose (on the skin between the nostrils), in addition to incisions of different lengths made inside the nose.
The “closed” approach:
This means that short and long incisions are only made inside the nose, without an external scar.
Dr. Fanous favors a third approach: a technique using ‘mini incisions’ inside the nose.
Dr. Fanous taught this technique in scientific cosmetic surgery conferences.
As well, there is usually no packing placed inside the nose. The absence of packing is very appreciated by our patients because removing it can be painful.
If it is necessary to add an element to give more support to parts of the nose or to change its form, Dr. Fanous uses the patient’s tissue (cartilage or fascia from behind the ear) or a soft synthetic implant.
There will be a plaster cast placed over the nose to reduce the swelling and act as a support, enabling the nose to heal in the desired shape. Dr. Nabil Fanous removes this small dressing during the first postoperative visit one week after the surgery, in his clinic in Montreal.
During this visit, the appearance of the nose will not reflect the final result expected by Dr. Fanous. However, the nose will already look much better than before the rhinoplasty.
The surgical swelling will decrease in the following weeks and months to reveal the remaining result. The nose will continue to heal discreetly for several months.
Your rhinoplasty surgery will take place without general anesthesia.
Only local anesthesia and sedation will be used.
The rhinoplasty procedure is usually completed within one hour to one hour and a half.
The ‘procedure day’?
Patients can return home one to two hours following the intervention.
A relative or a friend must accompany them.
If the patient comes from outside of Montreal, a service can be arranged so that he can be lodged and supervised for the first night.
A telephone service is accessible for our Quebec patients, as well as for our patients from different parts of Canada, the USA and the rest of the world, to answer any of their questions during the recovery period.
There are other procedures commonly performed by Dr. Fanous during a rhinoplasty.
For some patients, adding a chin augmentation “mentoplasty” makes the operated nose look smaller and could improve the overall beauty of the nose after a rhinoplasty.
This is suggested especially in the case of certain weak facial contours, where a slight increase in the chin projection helps align the patient’s facial profile in order to reveal more balanced nose.
After surgery, the main restriction that must be met after a rhinoplasty is to avoid strenuous physical activity and training for the next month.
The ‘recuperation time’?
Recovery time is approximately one week following a rhinoplasty.
Patients usually feel comfortable returning to work once the dressing is removed, seven days after surgery.
For most patients who opt for a rhinoplasty, there will be some mild bruises slightly visible under the eyes during the first few days following surgery.
In many patients having undergone a rhinoplasty, bruises are not very noticeable by the first postoperative appointment, about a week following surgery.
As in other surgeries, there are certain uncommon complications that may be associated with the rhinoplasty procedure, such as infection, bleeding, marked scarring, allergic reactions, rejection, asymmetry, etc.

A computer imaging system is also available during the first consultation to preview the possibilities of results. This, however, only gives an idea of the result, without constituting or guarantee.
In Montreal, surgeon Dr. Fanous commonly operates patients from all over Quebec.
As well, many patients from all over Canada, the USA and the rest of the world, consult him.
